* What are ants? |
Ants are a complex species and in Australia alone there are over 4000 ant species. And for such a small, perhaps seemingly simple insect, there may be a lot you don't know about the average ant.
* About the colony |
The ant colony is a highly elaborate community and the nest is more than just the place where all the ants live. Like a beehive, it is the central nervous system for an elaborate community system consisting of the queen, the male ants and the often hundreds of worker ants which you usually see running around on the ground or walls.
- The queen ant's primary responsibility is to reproduce and a nest may contain more than one queen (depending on the species);
- The male ant's only function is to mate with the queen; mating tends to take place in flight and the males die soon after this;
- The worker ant's primary responsibility is to gather food for the colony, care for the young, construct and repair the nest and defend the nest. They will follow an ant-produced chemical trail back to the nest, and if there are multiple nests each will have its own scent and its own trail;
- The general life cycle of an ant is from egg to larvae to pupae to adult. This usually takes 6-8 weeks.
* How they feed |
Ants usually invade the home in search of food, water and shelter. The worker ants work like robots, so that once they have found a food source, they will continue feeding from it until it is depleted (or removed) before seeking out another.
Different species have different food preferences, and while ants are omnivores (they eat everything!) their preferences tend to be fatty substances and sweet foods. It's important to note that these preferences may change as climate, season and development of the colony changes.
